Yesteryear Collection



Established on the 4th December 1855 as a result of a petition laid at Quarter Sessions by certain magistrates under the provisions of the County Police Act 1839. At the time of amalgamation in 1968 the force had an establishment of 905 and had absorbed the following:

Abingdon Borough Police. Est. 1/4/1836, with a strength of 3 officers. Merged into the Berkshire Constabulary 1/4/1889 by which time its strength had risen to 6.

Maidenhead Borough Police. Est. 27/1/1836, with a strength of 4 officers. Merged ? 1/4/1889, by which time its strength had risen to 11.

Believed to have been established in the 17th century. Merged into the Berkshire County force 26/3/1875, with a strength of 7 officers.

New Windsor Borough Police. Est. 5/3/1836, with a strength of 13 officers. Finally merged with the Berkshire force 1/4/1947 when its strength had risen to 45. Earlier attempts to merge had been to no avail ”because of the presence of the Royal residence”.

Wallingford Borough Police. Est. 13/1/1836 with a strength of 3 officers. This remained unchanged until the force merged with Berkshire 28/7/1856.

Wantage Borough Police. Est. 19/6/1828 . Merged 9/2/1856.
